Alpina Cowl

The Alpina cowl is a voluminous and warm winter accessory, adorned with a floral jacquard motif. Alpina is inspired by Chloraea alpina, a delicate orchid that grows in rugged and high areas of Patagonia, resisting the freezing wind and mountain sun. A beautiful contrast typical of winter knits: colorful, soft, and functional textiles that protect us from the cold of the season. Made with the beautiful Patagonian merino from Lanas Bagual, it is a

Construction

The hat begins with the brim, knitted in double rib stitch, which has a double length for added thickness. Then, the body of the hat is knitted using the jacquard technique, and the crown is shaped by decreases in the round.

The cowl begins with a provisional cast-on, then it is knitted in the round to form a tube. Once the desired length is reached, the provisional cast-on is undone, the cowl is twisted, and the stitches of both ends are joined using the Kitchener stitch technique, forming a Möbius strip.

Sizes:

Cowl: One size. 78 cm circumference and 23 cm width.

Hat: S (M, L) with 42 (46, 50) cm circumference, 26 (26.5, 26.5) cm height, and 14 (15, 15) cm brim.

Cowl: Patagonian merino from Lanas Bagual (100% merino wool, sport weight, 300 m in 100 gr) in color #203 (main color) and #48 (contrast color). MC: 300 m. CC: 300 m.

GAUGE

Cowl: 27 stitches x 34 rounds in 10 cm measured in stockinette stitch, in the round, with needle Size A. 18 stitches x 35 rounds (1 motif repeat) in 7.5 cm x 12 cm knitted in the round, in jacquard, using Size A needles.

Suggested needle size:

Cowl: Size A: 4mm circular needles with a long cable for magic loop or your preferred materials for knitting small circumferences.

Hat: Size A: 4mm circular needles (or size needed to obtain gauge) with a long cable for magic loop or your preferred materials for knitting small circumferences.
Size B: 3mm circular needles (or size needed to obtain gauge) with a long cable for magic loop or your preferred materials for knitting small circumferences.

Kits

Each kit includes:

- the skeins needed to knit the garment in the size of your choice, and

- a set of 2 stitch markers from Bagual. The markers are a selection of markers made from horsehair, stoneware ceramic, or porcelain.

The kit does not include the pattern. You can add the pattern separately to your purchase or buy it directly from the designer's website.

The history of your threads

In Chilean Patagonia, dedicated producers with over 30 years of experience produce this highest quality wool.

The sheep live on free-range pastures, which preserves the grasslands, and are free from animal cruelty. Our products are 100% Mulesing-free.

Our wool is hand-washed and spun on a small scale by expert natural fiber artisans in the city of Talca.

Then it continues its journey to Bagual, where it is dyed with ecological dyes

free of heavy metals to protect your skin, your loved ones, and the environment. Our vibrant colors enhance the texture and properties of these yarns in your garments.

Disclaimer

This is a semi-industrial product where multiple steps are done by hand. We want you to know that you might find small pieces of vegetable matter in your yarn, as well as a little bit of sand when you wind it. Both come from the Patagonian grasslands. (We told you these sheep like to rub themselves in sandbanks 🤭).

Our wool is spun in a semi-industrial mill, and you might find some irregularities in thickness and twist in your yarn. We like it; it gives identity and texture and makes each garment unique.

Your skeins are hand-dyed, resulting in semi-solid and variegated colors. We suggest buying all the skeins for your project at the same time and alternating skeins while knitting if you want to avoid pooling in your garments.
